SUNOL — A California Highway Patrol officer was not seriously hurt after his motorcycle malfunctioned and he crashed on a rural highway near Interstate 680 this evening.

The motorcycle officer, who is based in San Jose, was heading home east on Highway 84, about one mile east of I-680, about 6:15 p.m. when the rear wheel of the motorcycle began to wobble and he lost control, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

“Something happened to the rear tire or axle area,” he said.

The officer was traveling between 35 and 40 mph in a 55 mph zone when he crashed and fell onto the road. He received cuts and complained of pain in his hip, and was taken to Valley Care Medical Center in Pleasanton.
