Caltrans has received a low bid of $80.7 million — $54.9 million below internal estimates — to build a transition structure for the new east span of the Bay Bridge, the highway agency announced Tuesday.
MCM Construction Inc. submitted the lowest of three bids to build the Yerba Buena Island Transition Structure, which will connect the side-by-side decks on the new single-anchored suspension bridge to upper and lower decks in the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel.
Caltrans’ engineering estimate for the job was $135 million, indicating that competition in the depressed construction industry is lowering the price for public works projects.
Caltrans is expected to award the contact within 60 days, and the completion date for this contract is 2013.
