STOCKTON — A man wanted for killing two people in Oakland in September shot and killed himself this morning as police prepared to arrest him.
Damon Joseph Ferreira, 34, was alone inside a home in Stockton when he killed himself around 7 a.m. as Oakland police, with San Joaquin area SWAT teams, surrounded the residence, police officials said.
Ferreira, who was also known as Damon Joseph Keen, was suspected of shooting and killing Damon Wessel, 48, and Michael Caldwell, 44, inside their apartment in the 4000 block of Canon Avenue in September, police said. A few days later police issued a warrant for Ferreira’s arrest and had been looking for him since. He was recently featured on the TV program “America’s Most Wanted.”
Ferreira was also wanted on a warrant for violating his parole after a carjacking conviction. He was working as a construction worker and most recently lived in Dublin, police said in September.
Police said Ferreira killed Wessel and Caldwell on Sept. 23 around 8:30 p.m. A third victim, a 27-year-old man, was shot in the attack but is recovering, police said.
Police said they learned at the beginning of the investigation that the victims knew their attacker, but it is not known how for how long.
Wessel and Caldwell had known each other for some time but had only lived in the apartment for a few months, police said. Caldwell worked at a Safeway store in San Francisco, and it is believed Wessel was
retired.
A friend of Caldwell’s, who asked that his name not be used for safety reasons, said Caldwell loved gardening and cooking, and liked to relax, have barbecues and be with friends.
Police have not released a motive for the killings.
