Original Article: Men armed with guns on robbery spree in Oakland’s Fruitvale district

OAKLAND — Two men armed with guns are suspected of robbing at least seven people in the Fruitvale neighborhood in the past five days, police said this morning.

Two of the robberies took place this morning, at 5:50 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., in an area bounded by East 12th Street and Foothill Boulevard by 30th and 35th avenues. The first incident occurred Thursday night near the intersection of International Boulevard and 20th Avenue.

In one incident, near 35th Avenue and East 12th Street, a man was punched in the face by one of the suspects before he was robbed.

Police said the suspects, one armed with a pistol and the other with an assault rifle, confront people who are walking alone on the street then search and rob them of wallets, backpacks, cell phones and other items.

The robbers are believed to be driving an older model, grayish-colored Saturn or Toyota Corolla.

Crime Stoppers of Oakland, together with the Police Department, are offering up to $30,000 in reward money for information leading to the suspects’ arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call robbery investigators at 510-238-3326, or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
