Original Article: One rescued, another dies off San Mateo County coast

PRINCETON-BY-THE-SEA — Rescue teams pulled two men out of the water off the San Mateo County coast Friday evening amid high waves and gusty winds, but the second boater later died at a hospital.

Two men in a boat fired a flare after their vessel capsized at 4:30 p.m. just south of Pillar Point near Princeton-by-the-Sea, where the Mavericks Surf Contest is held, Coast Guard Petty Officer Dorian Jackson said.

The Coast Guard quickly rescued one of the boaters, then about an hour later pulled the other out of the water after locating him through a helicopter search. The first man was stable at Seatown Coastline Medical Center in Moss Beach. The second man, who was wearing a life jacket, died at the hospital. Neither man’s identity was available late Friday.

The Pillar Point Harbor Master took the boat ashore. California Highway Patrol officers also responded.

In addition to darkness, rescue teams were battling treacherous conditions that prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory and a gale warning for gusty winds.

Around the time of the capsize there were 15- to 16-foot waves in the area. Winds were whipping around 35 mph to 40 mph at the time.
