BERKELEY — Berkeley police have released a sketch of a man who investigators say is responsible for shooting a man in the abdomen during a botched robbery last month.
Police are asking for the community’s help in identifying the man who is wanted on suspicion of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
On Nov. 29 at 6:19 p.m., a Berkeley police officer heard a single gunshot while he was on patrol in the 2700 block of Russell Street in Berkeley. Moments later, he found the victim, an Oakland man, on the ground.
The man said he and his girlfriend were approached from behind by the gunman, who demanded money. When the victim refused, the suspect fired a single shot, hitting the man in the abdomen. The woman was not injured.
The shooter ran east on Russell Street. The victim was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police say they are looking for an Asian man in his early 20s who stands about 5 foot 6 and has a thin build. Police say the suspect has short dark hair, a round face and was wearing a dark hooded zip-up sweatshirt during the crime.
