Two shootings within half a day wounded three and left others fearful in unincorporated North Richmond on Wednesday morning.
Contra Costa sheriff’s detectives developed scant leads in either case during the early investigation, and did not learn enough to opine whether they were related, spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The first attack came about 8 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Third Street and Grove Avenue, where neighbors summoned deputies after hearing gunfire in the street.
Authorities found a 19-year-old man on the ground in front of a house on the 1500 block of Third, Lee said. Paramedics flew him to a regional trauma center in critical condition with a head wound. He underwent surgery Wednesday morning.
Four men might have been in the responsible group, Lee said, but authorities could not say whether they approached the victim on foot or by car. The motive remains a question.
Gunfire again rattled the neighborhood at 9:32 a.m. Wednesday, when someone left more than 20 shell casings in the street in front of the Neighborhood House of North Richmond senior center at the corner of Fifth Street and Silver Avenue.
Deputies found one injured man on Fifth Street, while another arrived at a hospital by private car. Their conditions were not immediately available.
